Torbjörn Bergman (Ph.D., Umeå, 1995)

Associate Professor of Political Science at Umeå University. He has been a Fulbright exchange student and a fellow (riksdagsstipendiat) at the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament). He has contributed to a number of international book-projects and published widely in academic journals, including the European Journal of Political Research, Scandinavian Political Studies and the Journal of European Public Policy. Bergman is editor, with Wolfgang C. Müller, and Kaare Strøm, of the special issue of the European Journal of Political Research (vol. 37, no. 3, 2000) on ‘Parliamentary democracy and the chain of delegation’. With Erik Damgaard he has edited the book, Delegation and Accountability in European Integration: The Nordic Parliamentary Democracies and the European Union (London: Frank Cass, 2000). With Kaare Strøm and Wolfgang C. Müller he has edited Delegation and Accountability in Parliamentary Democracies (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003). He is also editor of the special issue of Scandinavian Political Studies on ‘Parliamentary Democracy in Scandinavia: Shifting dimensions of citizen control’ (vol. 27, no. 2, 2004).

 Wolfgang C. Müller (Ph.D., Vienna, 1983)

Professor of Political Science at the University of Mannheim. Previously he taught at the University of Vienna and has been a guest researcher/professor at the University of Oxford, the University of Bergen, the Humboldt University, Berlin, the University of California, San Diego, and Harvard University. During the academic year 2002/03 he was Joseph A. Schumpeter Fellow at Harvard University. He has published widely on Austrian and comparative politics, particularly on political parties and political institutions. He has published in journals such as Electoral Studies, the European Journal of Political Research, the Journal of European Public Policy, the Journal of Legislative Studies, the Journal of Theoretical Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Party Politics, Political Studies, and West European Politics. His recent book publications include: Policy, Office, or Votes? How Political Parties in Western Europe Make Hard Decisions (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1999) and Coalition Governments in Western Europe (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000), both co-edited with Kaare Strøm; Die österreichischen Abgeordneten (Vienna: WUV Verlag, 2001), and Delegation and Accountability in Parliamentary Democracies (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003) co-edited with Kaare Strøm and Torbjörn Bergman.

 Kaare Strøm (Ph.D., Stanford, 1984)

Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. In 1994 he won the UNESCO Stein Rokkan Prize in Comparative Social Science Research. Strøm has previously taught at the University of Bergen, Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota. He is also a senior research fellow at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo. Strøm has published widely on parliamentary democracy and political parties. His work has appeared in the most prestigious political science journals, including the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, the European Journal of Political Research, Legislative Studies Quarterly and West European Politics. He is the author of Minority Government and Majority Rule (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990) and co-editor of Challenges to Political Parties: The Case of Norway (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 1997). His publications also include Policy, Office, or Votes? How Political Parties in Western Europe Make Hard Decisions (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1999) and Coalition Governments in Western Europe (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000), both co-edited with Wolfgang C.
